Ever walked into a house and felt… off? Like the room itself is tired and dragging you down. You yawn, reach for another coffee, and wonder why you’re exhausted by noon.
Scattered thoughts. Restless nights. Groggy mornings. The problem might not be you. It might be your lighting.
Your home should lift you, not wear you out. That’s why I created the Home Wellness Checklist. It’s a simple, step-by-step guide to turning your space into a place that supports your health.
Today, I’m tackling one of the easiest (but most overlooked) wellness upgrades: natural light. You don’t need a major home makeover to see massive improvements. Just a few quick tweaks, and you’ll be shocked at how much better you feel.
Let’s take a closer look at what you can do.
Natural light isn’t just a “nice-to-have”. It’s your body’s built-in reset button. Sunlight tells your brain when to wake up, when to wind down, and how to keep your mood in check. But when your home is dark and confined, your body and mind feel it.
Here’s how to fix it:
Natural light is essential for emotional and mental health.
A friend spent 7 weeks in Arizona and couldn’t get over how happy and active everyone seemed. Another friend did six weeks in Florida and felt like she was “living her best life.” Coincidence? Nope. A brighter home means a brighter you.
If you’ve been feeling low on energy, anxious, or not quite yourself, check your light exposure. You may not need a lifestyle shift; you might just need more sunshine.
We’ve all done it: hung thick, blackout curtains thinking we’re making our home “cozy.” And yes, they’re great for sleep. But during the day, they’re stealing your light. They make rooms feel smaller, gloomier, and less inviting.
Try this instead:
Fun fact: Homes with more natural light sell faster and feel better.
When Mark and I walked into our current home four years ago and saw the 30-foot ceilings, skylight, and 87 windows, I knew we were buying it. We removed every single window treatment and let the sunlight pour in. And let me tell you, the change was instant!
Some homes don’t get enough natural light. Basement apartments, long winters, tiny windows… it happens. That’s where light therapy fills in the gaps.
The right red light therapy mimics sunlight, bringing back energy, reducing inflammation, and improving skin.
But here’s the catch: most red light panels are just gimmicks. The real deal (called photobiomodulation) uses precise wavelengths to repair cells and recharge your body.
Here’s what to look for:
I personally swear by red light therapy. It played a huge role in my healing, especially for nerve regeneration in my left hand and foot. We have a red light tower inside our sauna, which I use religiously. It’s not a replacement for sunlight, but it’s the next best thing.
You don’t need to tear down walls or spend thousands on fancy upgrades to create a happier home. Small, intentional changes can have a noticeable impact on your mood, energy levels, and overall wellness.
So, here’s my challenge for you: Pick one thing, just one, and do it today. Open your blinds. Swap your heavy curtains. Hang a mirror. Then…watch how much lighter your space (and energy) feels. Trust me, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
