If you’re not sure how long you should wait to get in your sauna and are frustrated by reading conflicting information online, no worries – I’m here to help!
First, let me start by saying, there’s no “right or wrong way” to use your sauna and it doesn’t need to be complicated.
In this episode, I’m answering three common sauna-related challenges. First, I’ll break down heat-up time why some people wait longer to warm it up. Then, I’ll clear up the confusion around why red light therapy inside your sauna is beneficial. And finally, I’ll talk about a topic many sauna owners get wrong: putting an indoor sauna outside.
Owning a sauna should be simple and not create more stress in your life. This episode will help you understand how you can tailor your sauna experience to your wellness goals and let go of comparing yourself to others so you can enjoy your personal sweat sessions.
Question 1: Why does sauna heat-up time vary so much?
Jen’s Answer: Not all saunas warm up the same way and the location of the sauna matters. Also, Full-spectrum models heat up a few minutes quicker than Far infrared only saunas.
Where you place your sauna matters too. A sauna in a cold basement will take longer than a cozy bedroom.
And of course, personal preferences and health needs play a role. Some people crank up the heat, while others are comfortable at lower temperatures.
If your sauna is taking too long to warm up, try these:
Everybody has their heat tolerance, and that’s okay. I’m a heat warrior. I set my sauna to 135°F and let it heat up for about 30 to 45 minutes before getting in. Once inside, I turn the temperature to around 145°F so the heaters stay on while my body adjusts. But here’s the thing: you don’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.
The key is finding your sweet spot. Forget about what others are saying in Facebook groups or elsewhere. Everyone has different setups, locations, and preferences. The best way to figure out what works for you is simple: turn your sauna on, spend time in it, and listen to your body.
Question 2: What is the correct way to use red light therapy?
Jen’s Answer: Red light therapy is getting a lot of buzz, and for good reason. It supports thyroid health, speeds up muscle recovery, and helps with mental wellness.
But there’s still confusion about how to use it inside a sauna. Does sweat block the benefits? Do you need to sit in a specific position?
Here’s how to make sure you’re getting the most out of it:
In my routine, I start by turning my sauna on to about 130–135°F. Once it’s heated, I get in. The first thing I do is sit down in front of the red light, turn it on, and set the timer for 10 to 15 minutes.
To get the most out of the therapy, it’s all about positioning. I like to sit about 6 to 12 inches from the light, adjusting my body depending on what I’m focusing on.
A few months ago, I twisted my ankle doing yoga (of all things). So, when I was in the sauna, I’d sit with my legs crossed, placing my left ankle directly in front of the red light to target that area. Within a few days, the swelling was down, and it was on the road to healing.
Question 3: Can I put an indoor sauna outside?
Jen’s Answer: It’s tempting. More space. Better views. A spa-like vibe. But putting an indoor sauna outside is a bad idea.
So, the short answer is no; it’s not advisable. Indoor saunas are not designed to withstand outdoor conditions and can suffer significant damage over time.
Weather damage, pests, and a voided warranty are just a few of the problems that could cost you big.
Before you roll your sauna onto the patio, here’s what you need to know:
As we wrap up, here’s a testimonial from Tom, a firefighter from Utah. He spent years going back and forth on whether to buy a sauna. Now, he says it’s one of the best investments he’s ever made for his health and home.
“Jen, words can’t express how much you and my home sauna have changed my life. I struggled for years to pull the trigger on buying one of these from you. And the only regret sitting here right now, writing this is that I wish I called you sooner. The amount of, well, we’ll call it crap, pouring out of my body is incredibly alarming. I can’t believe how much black stuff it is releasing from my body. I’m not sure if I should be angry or excited. And you are right, I’m totally trashing my towels. But it doesn’t matter, I can buy new towels, I can’t buy a new life. I literally think this hot box is saving my life. Full disclosure, I’ve only had it a few weeks. And I’ve cried twice in here. I’m not sure why, but for some reason it feels safe for me to let it go here. I feel relaxed for the first time in years when I sit on this wooden bench. I’m sleeping better and my belt is even on the next notch. My mind and body needed this, so thank you. Thank you for walking me through this process and helping me invest in myself. I can’t wait to read your upcoming book.”
